I have read the following from many different lighting sources including a kichler’s lighting tips:

1^st LAYER, OVERALL LIGHT

Ceiling Fixtures – Use Mini Chandelier’s, Pendants or Bowl style lights. Traditional, Contemporary, Country, Feminine & even Masculine Styles are now available in a variety of sizes! This approach can really introduce or intensify the style and personality of your commode. 

Recessed Fixtures – For a Low-Profile approach to overall “Bathroom Finesse” consider adding some Recessed Fixtures, generally referred to as “Cans” – no pun intended! This look provides unparalleled overall light and can be designed very specifically to highlight or emphasize the uniqueness and design of your Lavatory!

(This look is generally reserved for larger sized Bathrooms.)

2^nd LAYER, TASK LIGHT

Typical Vanity Lights, Sconces and the Dreaded Hollywood Bars – Your “Task Lighting” is probably the most important layer of light; this is the light you use when grooming, primping, plucking, brushing, flossing, shaving, applying make-up, styling…

You see where I’m going with this, if it has to be done in the bathroom this is the layer of light that will help you achieve the best results! This layer of light needs to be bright without blaring. This light needs to completely wash over you with a warm glow that comes from above and the sides; light that only washes down from above is less flattering that light that comes from both above and beside!
